Green Button Document Library

The following documents provide background on the Green Button Initiative as well as providing important reference documents for Green Button application developers.

KEY REFERENCES

The references in this section represent the principle technical documents that define and describe the Green Button technology.  The primary reference is the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB) REQ.21 -- Energy Services Provider Interface (ESPI) standard. Published in 2011, the standard was revised and ratified by NAESB April 8, 2019.  The current version implemented corrections and enhancements to the standard that have been developed by the Green Button Alliance OpenADE Task Force based on the experience of Green Button implementers.

NAESB REQ.21 -- Energy Services Provide Interface (ESPI) Standard

The Green Button technology is based on the Use Cases covered by the ESPI standard and incorporates the energy usage information (EUI) and personal identifiable information (PII) "resources" defined within the standard.  All certification applicants are required to purchase a copy of the latest published standard as part of the Certification requirements.  Changes to the current published ESPI standard are described in the "Implementation" section.

Green Button Energy Usage Exchange Schema

The current working ESPI Resource XML schema definition used to represent Green Button data.  The scheme provides automatic validation of Green Button data streams/files.  Most elements of the schema are optional, as required by the REQ.21 ESPI standard.  The "Certification" section details which schema elements are mandatory.

Green Button Retail Customer Exchange Schema

The current working ESPI Retail Customer XML schema definition used to represent Green Button Personal Identifiable Information (PII).  The ESPI standard precludes the transmission of PII with energy usage information to protect the privacy of Retail Customers.  However, certain applications that can benefit from access to energy usage information, require access to Retail Customer information, such as their address.  To address this requirement, the OpenADE Task Force has developed a Retail Customer exchange schema, which will be added to the ESPI standard as a part of the standard's update in 2018.
